PromptPad
PromptPad AI Keyboard for iPhone

Rewrite text on iPhone in any app, in one tap.

There are two good ways to rewrite text on an iPhone. Here is how each one works, when to use it, and what the result looks like.

The short answer

To rewrite text on iPhone, either select the text and use Apple Writing Tools (on iPhones with Apple Intelligence), or type with an AI keyboard such as PromptPad and tap a shortcut like Make Formal. The keyboard method works in any app and on iPhones without Apple Intelligence.

Method 1: Apple Writing Tools

Writing Tools is part of Apple Intelligence. It is free, built in, and processes text on device or with Apple's Private Cloud Compute.

  1. Write your text in any app that supports text selection.
  2. Select the text you want to change.
  3. Tap Writing Tools in the menu that appears.
  4. Choose an option such as Rewrite, Friendly, Professional or Concise, then keep or revert the result.

Good to know: you need an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence, with Apple Intelligence turned on. Menus vary a little between iOS versions.

Method 2: one tap with the PromptPad keyboard

  1. Switch keyboards

Tap the globe key and pick PromptPad. First time? See how to add the keyboard.

  2. Type as usual

Write the message in WhatsApp, Mail, Slack or any other app. Messy is fine.

  3. Tap a shortcut

Press Make Formal, Shorten or any shortcut above the keys. The text is rewritten in place.

There is no need to select text first. In Preview mode you see the new version and choose Apply or Regenerate. In Instant mode the text is replaced straight away.

PromptPad runs on Apple Intelligence on supported iPhones with iOS 26, or on a cloud AI model on iPhones without it. That makes it a way to rewrite text without Apple Intelligence.

One message, six tones

The same rough draft, rewritten with different shortcuts. These are examples of the kind of output you get; AI results vary a little each time.

🧊 Calm reply

You typedi already told you this twice, read my last email

SentJust to recap what I mentioned in my last email, here are the key points again.

Make an email sound professional

A professional email usually needs four things: a greeting, the point in the first sentence, one clear ask, and a sign-off. The Make Formal shortcut handles most of that from a rough draft, and it keeps facts like dates and names.

If you write the same kind of email often, build your own version. "Rewrite as a short update for a client. End with the next step" becomes a button you can tap every time. See custom tones and shortcuts for more ideas.

Only want the typos gone, not a new tone? Use just fix grammar instead. Writing to someone in another language? You can rewrite in another language with a Translate shortcut.

Which method should you use?

  • Use Writing Tools if your iPhone supports Apple Intelligence and Apple's built-in options are enough. It is free and already there.
  • Use PromptPad if you rewrite messages many times a day, want your own tones as one-tap buttons, write in Arabic, Persian or another of its 9 keyboard languages, or have an iPhone without Apple Intelligence.
  • Use both if you like. Switching between the Apple keyboard and PromptPad takes one tap on the globe key.

Rewriting questions

Can I rewrite text on iPhone without Apple Intelligence?

Yes. PromptPad's cloud mode works on iPhones that don't support Apple Intelligence. You type with the PromptPad keyboard and tap a shortcut to rewrite the text.

Does it work in WhatsApp and Instagram?

Yes. PromptPad is a keyboard, so it works in any app that allows third-party keyboards, including WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Telegram and Slack.

Will the rewrite change my language?

No. Results come back in the language you wrote in. To change language, use a Translate shortcut.

Is the text I rewrite stored?

No. In cloud mode the text is sent to the AI model, the result comes back, and the text is discarded. In on-device mode it never leaves your iPhone.
